A Calamity of Souls

Set in 1968 southern Virginia, A Calamity of Souls by David Baldacci follows two lawyers—one white, one Black—as they confront racism and injustice in a deeply divided society.

Jack Lee, a white lawyer who has never challenged racial inequality, takes on the defense of Jerome Washington, a Black man accused of murdering a wealthy white couple. Uncertain of his abilities, Jack soon realizes the case is about more than guilt or innocence—it’s a battle against a corrupt system.

He teams up with Desiree DuBose, a passionate Black lawyer from Chicago dedicated to civil rights. Despite their differences, they must work together to stand up to a powerful prosecutor and the racial prejudice surrounding the trial.

Over ten years in the making, the novel vividly portrays the struggle for justice and equality during a turbulent time in American history.
